"Passionate Generosity"
Selected Works from the
Marshall & Helen Hatch Collection
Reception: September 17th, 2009

The Marshall and Helen Hatch art collection defines the most important period in the history of Northwest Art, "The Northwest School".

Their passionate and intelligent stewardship has preserved this important period in Northwest Art. Their extensive and significant collection has been described as a "blue chip" representation of Northwest Art by Patricia Junker, (Seattle Art Museum, Curator of American Art). She states, "It sets a very high standard, there are great works from key figures, especially Graves."

Marshall and Helen Hatch started collecting art in the early 1970's by acquiring the entire private collection of the esteemed art dealer, Richard White. This launched what was to become a lifelong passion and a commitment to the long-term preservation of the legacy of what has become one of the most important art movements of Twentieth Century American Art.

A large portion of the Hatch Collection has been donated to the Seattle Art Museum upon their deaths and forms the Marshall and Helen Hatch Collection of Northwest Modern Art at the Seattle Art Museum, where Marshall served as president of the board from 1982-1986. Marshall and Helen were also highly instrumental in establishing the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner.

Currently on exhibition at the Woodside Braseth Gallery is a select group of works from this remarkable art collection, comprised of pieces by Mark Tobey, Paul Horiuchi, William Ivey, Morris Graves, Guy Anderson, Kenneth Callahan, Leo Kenney, Hilda Morris, Helmi Juvonen, Philip McCracken, Imogen Cunningham, and Richard Gilkey to name a few.
