Neptune's Picnic and Beyond
"Oil and mixed media synthesize new media with old/ancient materials and texts in non-linear perspectives of time. Texts are juxtaposed with submersion, intellect with sensation. Apples are painted with poison paints, and images of paper and insects posit wave patterns. Familiar images are somehow changed.
The intuitively organized process of seeking love is the metaphorical and visual language of this show. I've used text from Homer's "Odyssey", the "Psyche and Cupid" myth, and ancient creation myths in my art for a number of years.
These are seeking mythologies in which the hero/heroine wanders for an uncomfortable amount of time in search of something corporeal and solid which they love - the act of creation.
In pursuit of this theme, this show incorporates Keats' poem, "To Homer"; through its complexity it is truly a love song to the transformative powers of seeking.
I use deliberate materials as part of the story. One thing I explored in this show was incorporating and organically synthesizing very new media (digitally manipulated images and text) with old media.
I think of this as integrating time in a nonlinear position. Images and texts become layered and new meanings arise."
